PENS OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS

The Pillars of Olympian Zeus are the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which was the largest temple of antiquity and was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Gods.

The Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus is one of the most important and ancient sanctuaries in Athens and was founded, according to the tradition preserved by the traveler Pausanias, by Deucalion, the ancestor of the Greeks, in honor of Zeus in exchange for his salvation after the flood.

The construction of the great temple, which began under Peisistratus the Younger in 515 BC on the site of an older temple from the early 6th century, reached the quay and was interrupted, as we mentioned, with the overthrow of the tyranny. The late archaic temple was a Porean, Doric style, of colossal dimensions. Part of its building materials were later used for the construction of the eastern arm of the Themistocleian Wall.
The site of the Olympian Amphitheatre and Hadrian’s Gate is one of the most important cultural and archaeological attractions not only of Athens but of Greece and continues to attract the interest of every visitor to the capital. A walk here is a walk through the history and culture of Athens. The temple, along with the ruins around it, constitute an important historical relic managed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture.
